A watershed is the area of land where all surface water drains or infiltrates to the same common destination, such as a lake, stream, wetland, aquifer, or ocean.  It is delineated by the point of highest elevation surrounding the feature it drains to.  Watersheds vary greatly in size.  Small watersheds can be part of much larger ones.  For example:  the English Coulee, Turtle River, and Lower Forest River Watersheds are all part of the Red River of the North Watershed, which, in turn, is part of the Hudson Bay Watershed, and so forth.  In the Continental United States, there are 2,110 watersheds.  (USEPA)

Watershed projects are designed to assess the quality of water as it moves through the watershed, implement non-point source pollution Best Management Practices, or provide public educational opportunities to actively improve water quality.  The Grand Forks County Soil Conservation District is engaged in multiple watershed projects, in various stages, covering a total of 815 square miles or 522,400 acres.  Our projects include the Turtle River Watershed (Implementation) Project, and the English Coulee Assessment Project.  To learn more about each project, click on the links above.
